TO Tech or not to Tech?

Technology is everywhere and influences our daily lives on a regular basis and yet we don't really take into account how it is used in sports performance or rehab. The use of technology and specifically the gathering of data across the sports arenas is quickly becoming a neverending stream of numbers and statstitics. However, what do we do with all the data and how can it make sports performance and rehab better?

We can easily get swallowed up by the numbers and I have seen data being gathered by numerous coaches/sports organizations, but they seem to not be using it to benefit the athlete or enhance the rehab process. If we are going to gather all this data, then we should use and use it properly. Take this patient I saw today for her re-evaluation as she progresses through her ACL rehab. She participated in a series of tests and measurements that allow me to see not only her muscle growth and development, but included functional tests to assess her ability to do the activities that I would expect her to do when she gets back to playing soccer.

Functional tests such SLB reach, hop tests, jump tests and lunge testing as well as ROM/mobility tests, circumferential tests and dynometric testing are all great tests, but if you are not using them to advance your patient's progress and ability to return to sport or not using the sport tracker data to improve team and athlete performance on the field, it all quickly become just another day in the numerical matrix.

What data tracking systems are you using and are you discussing and modifying your training to positively affect the data? What tests and devices are you using to assess your physical therapy clients' progress and how are you advancing their activities to meet their rehab goals?
